We would particularly recommend a visit to the McGill Duncan Gallery at the bottom of King Street Castle Douglas where Jill and Zoe Blamire have a lovely selection of paintings for you to look at and possibly purchase. They hold regular exhibitions which are always interesting.

Due to its important artistic heritage, Kirkcudbright was awarded the title 'Artists' Town' a few years ago. Between around 1850 and 1950 Kirkcudbright was established as an artists' colony. The Faed family emerged as acclaimed artists, followed by probably the most famous, E. A. Hornel, one of 'The Glasgow Boys,' whose High Street home is now run by The National Trust for Scotland and is open to the public. Jessie M. King and her husband E.A. Taylor also settled there drawn by the creative spirit of their fellow artists and also, it's believed, because of the unique quality of the light. Nowadays the town has become a thriving artists' colony once again with numerous contemporary arts' initiatives taking place. There is a WASPS Studio and a remarkable selection of fine galleries here cementing Kirkcudbright's place firmly in the Scottish art scene.
